NEW SHARON — A partially blind horse was killed Tuesday morning when it was struck by a Jeep on Industry Road, Maine State Police Trooper Scott Duff said.
Danielle Saulnier, 21, of Gardiner was driving north at about 5:22 a.m. and because of other traffic she did not see the horse, which escaped from its pasture, he said.
The horse appeared to have gone through the fence, which was on the ground, Duff said.
Saulnier and her passenger, Cody Adams, 20, of New Sharon were not injured.
The horse was deceased when Duff arrived on the scene, he said.
The 29-year-old, part Appaloosa horse named Misty belonged to Clyde Allen of Industry Road. Allen’s wife, Anita, said Misty was a family riding horse and the last one the Allens owned.
“We recently found out she was blind in one eye,” Anita Allen said, and had been acting skittish lately. Misty usually doesn’t go out but she must have because the fence was down, she said.
Saulnier’s 2000 Jeep was damaged, Duff said.
