LEWISTON — A memorial service for Laudrinha Kubeloso, planned for Friday night, was postponed as the slain woman’s family made their way to the area.

Organizers said the event would be rescheduled for early next week.

Kubeloso, 32, died last month after she was struck by a car on Howe Street. Police said her estranged boyfriend, 33-year-old Evaristo Deus, intentionally ran her over as Kubeloso walked home from her afternoon English-language classes. She was four months pregnant, and both Kubeloso and the fetus died later Tuesday at Central Maine Medical Center.

Police arrested Deus in New York the following day just as he was about to leave on a flight to Haiti, investigators said. He has since been returned to Maine where he awaits trial.

Kubeloso had been in Maine for about 18 months, according to friends, and had just been granted asylum and the right to work.

Organizers of the memorial said they would formally announce the event once a time and date is finalized.
