AUGUST — The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention says it has identified the first case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in a human in the state.
The CDC said Friday that the York County resident became sick at the end of August and was hospitalized. The person is now recovering at home.
The state says the virus has been identified in 22 mosquito pools in York County as well as an emu in Cumberland County. It has also been confirmed in humans in New Hampshire.
EEE can cause illness in people that in rare cases can be fatal.
The CDC encourages residents to use mosquito repellant and wear protective clothing when outdoors and to put screens on windows and doors so mosquitoes don’t enter the home.
