CORNISH (AP) — Authorities say the grisly discovery of human bones during construction work at Cornish Town Hall is no need for alarm.
Police responded to town hall on Monday when a crew installing a drainage pipe spotted the bones, including a human skull.
But it was quickly determined there was no foul play.
Historians say town hall was built on the site of a former cemetery and all the graves were exhumed and relocated in 1920. Apparently one was missed.
Selectman Dan Sherman called it an “unusual event.”
The remains were taken to Augusta for further examination and the goal is to identify them.
Meanwhile, the work has been suspended until authorities determine there are no more human remains in the area.
