PORTLAND (AP) — A lawyer for the former Maine State Police chief charged with sexually assaulting a 4-year-old child says his client plans to plead guilty.
Andrew Demers Jr., of New Gloucester, had been scheduled to appear in the Cumberland County Courthouse on Tuesday for a hearing.
But Walter McKee, the attorney for the 74-year-old Demers, told the Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1sHhQqG) the hearing was postponed until next month because an agreement was reached. The district attorney’s office confirmed the agreement.
No additional details, including a possible sentence, were released.
Demers has been free on $5,000 bail since his arrest March 17. He pleaded not guilty to gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact.
Demers served 26 years with the state police and served as chief for six years before retiring in 1993.
