FARMINGTON — Regional School Unit 9 directors voted Tuesday to approve Ruth Gauvin as interim assistant director of special services.

Gauvin, of Farmington, has been a special education teacher at Cascade Brook School in Farmington for 21 years. She will assist interim special services director Christine Gatto-Shea. Both will work four days a week.

The money for the assistant director was included in this year’s budget.

Asked if there was a plan to replace Gauvin, Gatto-Shea said there is an educational technician serving as a substitute and she has worked for the district for 14 years and knows all of the children and teachers.

The position is being advertised as a one-year temporary substitute teacher, Gatto-Shea said.

She said they are hoping the educational technician will apply for the position. She is very good and does have qualifications to teach. She has to meet all of the criteria like any other applicant, Gatto-Shea said.

“It will be a new challenge,” Gauvin said of her new position.

She thanked Superintendent Tom Ward for giving her the opportunity to become the assistant director.

In another matter, Ward told the board that last Thursday, Leanne Condon, assistant superintendent/director of curriculum, was trying to get her children off to school and tripped and fell, hitting her head.

She came to work because she thought she only bumped her head, but she actually had a moderate to severe concussion, he said.

“It is quite serious,” Ward said. It is unknown how long she will be out.

People need to avoid sending her questions or anything about school-related matters, he said.

“We need to wait for her to contact us,” Ward said.
