LEWISTON — A former prison guard from Auburn was indicted Wednesday by a Cumberland County grand jury on two counts of aggravated sexual assault stemming from an April incident.
Bret Butterfield, 23, was charged in September for sexually assaulting a female inmate at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham, according to The Associated Press.
The Cumberland County District Attorney’s office on Wednesday released the recent indictment against Butterfield that was handed up by a Cumberland County grand jury.
The gross sexual assault charge is a Class B felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
Butterfield was released from York County Jail in Alfred on $1,000 cash bail.
