BRIDGTON — Police confirmed two people were killed Sunday evening in a crash on Route 302 near the Naples town line around 5:50 p.m.

A news release from Chief Kevin Schofield of the Bridgton Police Department said the driver of the vehicle was taken to Bridgton Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The two passengers died from their injuries. Schofield said the identities of the vehicle’s occupants are being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.

Schofield said the preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was traveling southbound when it attempted to pass another vehicle before the driver lost control, striking a tree.

The investigation thus far indicates speed as a contributing factor in the crash.
