1922 – 2014
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Abbott Roscoe Twitchell, 91, of Portland, decided his rightful time, Sunday, Oct. 5, at University of Florida Health in Jacksonville, Fla.
He was born Dec. 28, 1922, in Turner. Abbott was a devout father, “grandfather,” husband, uncle and dear friend to many.
Abbott graduated from Woodstock High School in Bryant Pond. He worked for Diamond International as a very skilled die and toolmaker for more than 22 years. He also volunteered as a driver for Regional Transportation Program in Portland for more than three years before retirement.
Abbott enjoyed talking and time spent with his friends and family. He enjoyed discussing his favorite baseball team, the Boston Red Sox, and almost never missed a game. He was an avid hunter, who greatly enjoyed his many weekends spent at the cabin. He was an ornate “green-thumb,” working diligently in his prolific flower and vegetable garden year after year. Most of all, he will be remembered as a well-respected and highly intelligent family man.
Born to a family of 10 siblings, Abbott is survived by one sister, Mona Twitchell of Rohment Park, Calif.; and one brother, Roger Twitchell of Locke Mills. Abbott is also survived by his daughter, Debbie Twitchell, to whom he was intensely devoted, and her husband, Frank Cusamano, both of Kingsland, Ga. Also, he is survived by his very close niece, Melanie Marston of Pownal; and nephew, Gard Twitchell and family of Turner; as well as several other nephews, nieces, great-nephews and nieces, and very dear friends. He will be sadly missed by his close family friends, Miriam and David Clough, “granddaughter,” Rebecca Blankenship, and “great-grandson,” Nathaniel Roaix of Kingsland, Ga.
He was predeceased by his parents, Flossie and Oscar Twitchell; three sisters, Rachel and Cleo Twitchell and Faye MacDonald; as well as his four brothers, Forrest, Ronald, Harold and Wendell Twitchell. Abbott played the endearing role of grandfather to Michelle Blankenship, who passed in 2011. His wife, Ruth Twitchell, had passed away June 28, 1987, after their 32-year union. Paving the way, years later, he entered a long-term relationship with Pearl Goodwin, who brought him many years of love, excitement and happiness until her death in 2011.
