AUBURN — The Androscoggin Historical Society has announced the appointment of seven new members to its board of directors: Christopher Beam, Douglas Curtis, Ruby Jones, Crystal Magoon, Rick Morris, Daniel Philbrick and Donna Simpson.

Beam is a resident of Lewiston, who has always been interested in history. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a Ph.D. in the subject. He has worked for the federal government’s National Archives and the Muskie Archives of Bates College. He teaches history part-time in various local institutions.

Curtis is the manager of the Big Lots store in Auburn. He graduated from Edward Little High School and from Husson College with a bachelor’s in business administration. Through his store he has helped organizations such as Hope Haven and the United Way, and participates in Toys for Tots at Christmastime. He is an Auburn resident.

Jones moved to Maine last December from Kansas to work at the Lewiston Public Library. She received her B.A. in history from John Brown University in Arkansas. In Kansas, she volunteered for a summer at the Riley County Historical Museum. As an adult services technician at the Lewiston Public Library, she offers adult and teen programming to the public as well as serving as webmaster for the library’s website.

Magoon graduated from Lewiston High School and from the University of Maine at Farmington with a B.A. in psychology. She attended Simmons College in the online Masters of Library Science Program. She is employed by Harvard Maintenance. She has extensive volunteer experience at the Muskie Archives and Special Collection Library at Bates College, at Auburn Public Library, and as a computer and activities assistant at Pierce House in Farmington.

Morris is a registered professional archeologist, with B.A. and M.A. degrees from University of Nevada-Reno in anthropology. He has conducted investigations on historic cultural resources in California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, New Hampshire and Maine. He is chair of the Lewiston Historic Commission and is a member of the Lewiston Historic Preservation Review Board. His professional memberships include the Register of Professional Archaeologists, Society of Historical Archaeology, Maine Historical Society, and Maine Preservation. He is a resident of Lewiston.

Philbrick is a lifelong resident of Auburn. He holds a B.A. in history and a master’s degree in leadership studies from the University of Southern Maine. He is the director of communications at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College where he oversees public relations and marketing, among other duties for the campus. Philbrick also serves on the Auburn Planning Board and is a member of USM’s Franco-American Collection Board. He resides in Auburn with his wife and two children.

Simpson grew up in Lewiston and graduated from Lewiston High School. She is a registered nurse graduate of St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing. She has been employed by the Lewiston School Department for 24 years, currently the school nurse at McMahon Elementary. Now an Auburn resident, she has a keen interest in the state of Maine and preserving its resources.
