SOUTHAMPTON, N.J. — Ruth Ecklund, 92, of Southampton, N.J., died on Tuesday, Oct. 21.

She was born in Auburn and graduated from Edward Little High School, where she excelled in speed-skating. She served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1944, achieving the rank of seaman first class. She trained at Iowa State Teachers College and the Air Technical Training Center in Norman, Okla., then served at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station, assigned to Squadron VF-5, helping to keep the famous P52 fighters running in the war effort.

She was married to Brad Ecklund of Portland, Ore., who was an All-American linebacker/center at the University of Oregon, NFL All Pro for the New York Yanks, Dallas Texans and Baltimore Colts, and assistant coach for the NFL Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons and Chicago Bears.

She is survived, remembered and loved by her daughter, Daryl Lynne “Dede,” and son-in-law, Neil DeStefano, of Southampton, N.J.; son, Brad, and daughter-in-law, Michele Ecklund, of Glendale Ariz.; and son, Brant, and daughter-in-law, Tamara Ecklund, of Highland Ranch, Colo. She had five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
