LEWISTON — The man shot by police in Kennedy Park on Friday night suffered serious injuries, but police did not believe they were life-threatening.
Albert Crowley, 20, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. A representative for the hospital said Saturday afternoon that no information was being released on Crowley at that time.
The Maine Attorney General’s Office is investigating the shooting, a requirement of all officer-involved shootings.
Shortly after 8 p.m. Friday, Lewiston police received a call saying Crowley was involved in a domestic disturbance and had assaulted a woman in an apartment at 1 Knox St. The woman said Crowley had a gun when he left the apartment.
Police found Crowley in Kennedy Park. Police said he refused to follow officers’ commands and brandished a gun.
A woman who had been leaving a meeting near the park said she heard police repeatedly tell Crowley to show them his hands.
“They kept saying, ‘Show us your hands! Show us your hands!’ They said it repeatedly,” the woman said. She did not want to be identified. “I heard one officer tell another to tase the man. Then I heard, ‘Gun! Gun! He’s got a gun!’ and they opened fire. I really don’t think they wanted to shoot him.”
Three officers fired. Early reports were that Crowley was struck at least four times after officers fired roughly a dozen shots at him.
Lewiston police Lt. Michael McGonagle said Crowley’s injuries were serious but did not appear life-threatening. He did not know where Crowley was hit by the bullets.
McGonagle said a gun was found at the scene.
The officers involved in the shooting were Cpl. Michael Dumond, a 13-year veteran; Brian Bourgoin, a five-year veteran; and Zachary Provost, who has been with the force two years. All three have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in shootings involving police officers.
While the Attorney General’s Office investigates the shooting, Lewiston’s Criminal Investigation Division will investigate the domestic violence complaint.
McGonagle said Crowley likely would face charges in the coming days, but he declined to say what those charges would be.
