LEWISTON — A local man shot by police in Kennedy Park on Friday night was charged Monday afternoon in a local hospital with domestic violence assault and three counts of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.
All of the charges are Class C felonies, each punishable by up to five years in prison.
Albert Crowley, 20, of 1 Knox St. remained at Central Maine Medical Center with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries, police said. A hospital spokeswoman said she couldn’t confirm Crowley was a patient.
A judge visited Crowley at the hospital on Monday and set bail at $30,000 cash. Crowley will be transferred to Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn pending bail once he is discharged from the hospital, Lt. Michael McGonagle said.
If Crowley were to post bail, conditions of his release would include no contact with the victim, an 18-year-old woman who was his girlfriend. The couple have a child. She was injured during the assault on Friday night but refused medical attention, McGonagle said.
Crowley was shot in several different parts of his body, McGonagle said. Crowley was able to talk on Monday at the hospital.
Police responded to a call shortly before 8 p.m. on Friday saying Crowley had been involved in a domestic disturbance and had assaulted a woman in a Knox Street apartment. Police were told Crowley was armed.
When police confronted Crowley in the park, they demanded to see his hands, then yelled that he had a gun. That’s when police fired, according to police and a witness who spoke with the Sun Journal.
Three officers fired. Crowley was struck at least four times after officers fired roughly a dozen shots at him, according to initial reports.
The officers involved in the shooting were Cpl. Michael Dumond, a 13-year veteran; Brian Bourgoin, a five-year veteran; and Zachary Provost, who has been with the force two years. All three have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in shootings involving police officers. The Maine Attorney General’s Office is investigating the shooting, a requirement of all officer-involved shootings.
Other conditions of Crowley’s release include no alcohol or illegal drug possession and no possession of dangerous weapons.
