SCARBOROUGH — Eleanor Mains, 85, of South Paris, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 25, under the care of her two sons, Jonathan and David, and the Hospice of Southern Maine.

Ellie was born and raised along with her brother, Ralph, in Bangor by her parents, Harris and Alma Mower, and lived in Maine all her life. Both her parents and brother, Ralph, have since passed.

She graduated from the University of Maine in Orono, with a degree in sociology and enjoyed a varied career as a waitress, teacher, bookkeeper and as a social worker at Ledgeview Living Center in West Paris and later for the Oxford County Courthouse.

She met her late husband, John Mains, while waitressing at Bean’s Market Square Restaurant in South Paris and they spent many happy years together, until John’s passing in 1997.

Ellie was a member of St. Catherine of Sienna Church in Norway, and was active in both Winni and Acadia CFO Christian retreats for the past 41 years and served on the council ring. She is remembered by so many for her sweet countenance and good-natured spirit.

She was loved by many and is survived by her two sons, David Roakes and Jonathan Roakes; along with grandchildren, Harrison, Ellis, Emery, Matteo and Isabella Roakes; daughter in-law, Rebecca Sanborn; sister-in-law, Ruth Mower; nephew, Larry Mower; and niece, Gloria Nastari.
