100 years ago, 1914
Friday was Red Cross day at Bates college. All the girls of the college planned to spend the time in arousing enthusiasm for the American Red Cross Association. The plan at Bates is for each girl to give at least five cents and as much more as she is able. In the future it is planned to give teas when the girls will meet to make useful articles for the soldiers, listen to various accounts of the war, and learn in just what way they can be of the best service. Every college girl is urged to do what she can in this great movement.
50 years ago, 1964
(EDITORIAL) Announcement of the construction of a new 20,000 square foot building on a 20-acre site in Auburn to house a supermarket operated by the George C. Shaw Co. marks the beginning of a new shopping center in the twin city area. According to George M. Lord, real estate manager for the firm, a number of national and local firms have expressed an interest in locating stores in the area, which is well out on Center Street. The site will be convenient both for the twin city residents and for people driving from the Jay-Livermore area. This was one of the reasons for its selection. Development of a modern shopping center on what has been known as the Mower Farm definitely improves the overall financial position of the City of Auburn. Much of Auburn’s center-of-the-city commercial property has been razed. The downtown business district is but a shadow of its former self.

Lewiston-Auburn students claimed the top two individual debate awards in a series of debates Saturday at Oxford Hills High School In which student debaters from as far distant as Bangor and Massachusetts took part. In the Lincoln-Douglas contests, one-on-one debates on whether the United States should value global concerns above national issues, Lise Findsen of Edward Little High School in Auburn took first place, and Dianne Lagasse of Lewiston High School earned second place.
