MVHS effort to yield 38 tons of food

Over the course of just two months, Mountain Valley High School, with the support of the community, businesses and two local elementary schools, has concluded their part of the WGME School Spirit Challenge by gathering the equivalent of 74,000 pounds (38 tons) of food for the Good Shepherd Food-Bank.
Brenda Cayer, Student Council advisor, said the school’s 24 Student Council members spearheaded the effort. On Friday, when the Good Shepherd Food-Bank truck arrived to collect, Student Council members carried out close to 2,000 pounds of food and an astounding $14,791 in cash. Every dollar raised is equal to five pounds of food.
MVHS is competing in the School Spirit Challenge against high schools in Spruce Mountain in Jay, Gorham, Scarborough, Brunswick, Bonny Eagle in Standish, Edward Little in Auburn, Sanford and Gray-New Gloucester.
Last year’s winner, Wiscasset High School, gathered the equivalent of 56,000 pounds of food.
Cayer said the official school totals will be announced at 7 a.m. on Friday during the WGME morning show. Cayer, Principal Matt Gilbert and a half dozen of the most active students in this effort will be representing the school there.
Within this challenge, MVHS and Spruce Mountain challenged each other to collect the most food. The Jay school is in Gilbert’s hometown; his wife also works there.
Gilbert contacted the Spruce Mountain principal and was told they had collected the unofficial equivalent of 69,000 pounds of food. A terrific effort, but that total appears to be less than what this area produced. If that is the case, as part of the challenge, Spruce Mountain will have to place the MVHS banner in their gymnasium for the first two weeks of basketball season.
