1910 – 2014
LEWISTON — Bernadette (Gobeil) Goulet, a resident of Lewiston since 1971, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, Oct. 30, with her niece by her side. She was 104.
The daughter of Anthoine Gobeil and Marie-Louise Fluet, Bernadette was born in St. Ephreme de Beauce, Quebec, on April 14, 1910.
She worked for the Cloutier family as a housekeeper and nanny from 1928 to 1971. In 1930, she moved with the family to Robervale, Quebec. It was there she developed her love for a fledgling hockey club, the Montreal Canadiens. She listened many nights to their games on the radio and was a rare woman who enjoyed hockey so much.
In 1969, she reconnected with the love of her life, Rene Goulet, and after knowing each other all their lives, they were finally married on June 19, 1971. At the behest of Rene’s brother, the couple moved to Lewiston after the wedding.
Rene passed away just seven years later, in 1978. But Bernadette remained in Lewiston for the rest of her life, living on the second floor of a three-story walkup apartment building they had shared, until 2012.
Among her favorite pastimes was spending time with family, particularly her brother-in-law, Joseph Pamphille Goulet, and his wife, Marie Aurore, and their daughter, Marguerite (Goulet) Pelletier, and her husband, Daniel, and son, Justin.
She also loved to bake (her apple pies from scratch were legendary), loved to shop and loved to watch hockey, whether her grandnephew’s games or the pros.
She moved to Montello Manor in Lewiston in 2012, where she was a resident at the time of her passing.
She is survived by her half-sister, Marthe Roy Morin, of Canada, and her family; sisters-in-law, Georgette Goulet of Canada and Jacqueline Roy of Holyoke, Mass.; godchildren, Suzanne Roy-Marcotte, Gilles Pouliot and Betrade Allard, all of Canada; special friends, Jackie Fortin, Joan (D’Auteuil) Thistle, Bonita Mathieu and Juliette Bisson, all of Lewiston; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Anthoine Gobeil and Gerard Gobeil of Canada; a sister, Jeanne Gobeil Elliot, of Canada; two half-brothers, Paul Eugene Roy of Canada and Henri Louis Roy of Holyoke, Mass.; and three half-sisters, Therese Roy Pouliot, Fernandes Roy Bourgeois and Rita Roy LeBrun.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Montello Manor and all of the friends and family who have lent love and support to Bernadette over the years. After 104 years, she had lived her life and she was at peace leaving this world for the next.
