BRIDGTON — Bridgton Hospital will present three diabetes self-management classes beginning Friday, Nov. 14.
Linda Russell, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator, will discuss meal plans and diabetes and review carbohydrate counting from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14. Her presentation will include preconception care, pregnancy, gestational diabetes management and glucose monitoring.
Registered nurse and certified diabetes educator Elaine Drew, occupational therapist Karen Bodon, and optometrist Thomas Gordon will be featured from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Nov. 18.
Drew will provide an overview of diabetes, including the disease process, treatment options, hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and diabetic ketoacidosis (dangerously high blood sugar).
Bogdon will discuss the importance of daily exercise and how it can help improve blood sugar levels, decrease weight and enhance overall well being.
Gordon will discuss eye care and diabetes, including cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.
The Friday, Nov. 21, session, set for 9 a.m. to noon, will cover a variety of topics, including diabetic foot care, diabetic neuropathy, lab tests, glucometer testing, possible complications and psychosocial adjustment. Other subjects will include goal-setting and problem-solving; and preventing, detecting and treating acute complications such as hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
Bridgton Hospital Pharmacy Directory Denyell Gerchman will discuss medications for controlling diabetes, oral blood glucose lowering agents, insulin therapy and blood pressure and cholesterol lowering medications.
All classes will be held in the large conference board room at Bridgton Hospital.
