JAY — The Lung Cancer Alliance and Faith Way Baptist Church announce that a National Shine a Light on Lung Cancer Vigil will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at the church, 66 Hyde Road.
Rob Hutter, events coordinator, said, “It is almost impossible to not have a friend or loved one affected by this horrible disease. Depending on the type of lung cancer, the five-year survival rate is between 5 and 15%, so there is work to be done.”
Hutter added, “When my mother was diagnosed in 2009, I learned that most of the treatments available are the same as my grandfather received in 1980. My goal is to educate people in order to ‘end the stigma,’ as anyone can get lung cancer.”
Gov. Paul LePage issued a proclamation last week designating November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
All who wish to honor a loved one or patients themselves are invited. There will be free gifts, music, educational material and remembrance.
The event is being held in memory of Connie Hutter, who fought a five-year battle, and Maureen Bonamasso, who battled advance-stage lung cancer for three weeks.
