Posters to illustrate boycotts

LEWISTON — The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and the Center for the Study of Political Graphics (CSPG) have created a traveling poster exhibit of 58 posters highlighting diverse historical boycott movements from the 1950s to the present.

“Boycott! The Art of Economic Activism” features more than 20 boycotts, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott, United Farm Workers’ grape and lettuce boycott, divestment from South Africa to protest Apartheid, boycotts of corporations using sweatshops and the Palestinian call for Boycott.

Posters have been a primary tool for educating about the issues and inspiring people to action. This exhibition uses powerful posters to demonstrate the effectiveness of boycotts as a nonviolent tactic to end injustice and oppression.

The exhibit will be presented at Chase Hall, Bates College, by Students for Justice and Peace in Palestine, a student group, and Maine BDS Coalition, a statewide community group.

An opening celebration will be held in Chase Hall Lounge at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, and the exhibit will be open to the public through Friday, Nov. 14.

Genetic testing to be program topic

LEWISTON — “Genetic Testing: How Much Do I Want to Know?” is the topic of the fifth in a series of six Mini-Medical School presentations being offered this fall by Central Maine Medical Center.

The program will feature Sandhya Tagaram, MD, hospitalist at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, who will discuss the pros and cons of genetic testing, including what diseases can be detected by genetic testing and why someone might want to know — or not know — what their genetic make-up can reveal. She will also discuss genetic testing and insurance issues.

The program will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, at the Maine College of Health Professions, 70 Middle St. Interpreter services are available upon advance request.

PORTLAND — USM will host an open house for students considering transferring to USM, returning to school to complete their degrees or attending graduate school. The event will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in the Abromson Community Education Center, 88 Bedford St. Free parking is available in the attached garage. Learn more at usm.maine.edu/openhouse.

Representatives from academic programs will be on hand to discuss degree possibilities at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Student Service representatives will be available to help potential students begin to find a way to achieve their goals and fit education into their lives.

Hosted by Undergraduate Admission, Graduate Admissions and Professional and Continuing Education, the event is part of a concerted effort to help those individuals with some college experience complete a degree and remind those interested in expanding their education that pursuing their master’s degree at USM is a viable and competitive option.

USM has many students who don’t fit the traditional model: one third of USM students are over 25, half have transferred from other colleges, and one third attend part-time. The open house is designed to be a welcoming first step for nontraditional students and help them find the educational path that is right for them.
