WHITEFIELD — The tax collector in Whitefield has resigned after acknowledging she stole $17,000 from the town.

Selectmen announced Monday that Robin White resigned last week after disclosing she had misappropriated the money over a two-year period.

Her attorney, Roger Katz, says White has already repaid $6,000, and will repay the remaining $11,000 by the weekend.

Katz tells the Kennebec Journal the thefts occurred after White’s family ran into financial difficulty. He said she came forward because “she couldn’t live with herself.”

The town is auditing its books. Town Clerk Aaron Miller says police and the district attorney’s office have been informed, but the town is not actively pursuing charges although it retains the right to do so.
