NEWRY — Selectmen learned Tuesday night that it will be expensive to fix all the problems along a three-mile stretch of Sunday River Road in one shot.
With town budget work looming, Code Enforcement Officer David Bonney sought and received a budget estimate of $900,520 from Bruce A. Manzer Inc. for 38,593 square yards, or 16,600 lineal feet of road. That estimate includes culvert repair and guardrails.
Bonney said it is an estimate and the numbers can be fine-tuned by the Anson contractor.
Manzer also broke the work down into six sections so the town could decide if it wants to piecemeal it. It doesn’t include shoulders, guardrail and road striping, although Bonney added the expense for shoulders and guardrail to Manzer’s cost.
Section one, the Monkey Brook Road intersection with Sunday River Road, is 705 square yards. That estimate is $6,420.
The second section, from that intersection to Sunday River Bridge, is 5,156 square yards, estimated to cost $104,090. With a shoulder and guardrails, it would cost $111,690. That stretch is 18 feet wide and would be widened to 20 feet.
The third section, from Sunday River Bridge to Douglass Road, is 6,054 square yards and the estimate is $123,230, or $146,230 with shoulders and guardrail costs added. That would also be widened from 18 feet to 20 feet.
Section four is 23,200 square yards from Douglass Road to the 2008 reconstruction. That is estimated at $468,410 or $486,410 with shoulders and guardrails added. The road would be widened from 18 feet to 20 feet.
Section five is the 2008 reconstructed section of 811 square yards. The estimate to widen the road to 20 feet is$7,390 plus $500.
Section 6 is the Letter S option of 2,667 square yards and is estimated at $122,780, plus $13,000 for shoulders and guardrails and $7,000 for culvert repair.
The contractor would provide all necessary engineering, layout and project control at no cost to the town for sections two, three, four and six, Manzer’s Nov. 13 letter to Bonney states. Grade and slope issues would also be corrected.
Manzer’s total estimated cost for the six sections is $831,320. Another $22,200 for shoulders, $40,000 for guardrail, and $7,000 for culvert repair, brings the total estimated cost to $900,520.
“This definitely gives us some numbers to play with for the budget,” Selectman Gary Wight said after Bonney read the sections and costs involved.
“Yes, it gives us some food for thought,” Bonney said.
Selectmen took it under advisement to revisit it later.
