1930 – 2014
SOUTH PARIS — Johanna E. Zimmermann, 84, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, Nov. 21.
She was born on May 20, 1930, in Munich, Germany, the only child of Richard and Luise Schoener.
She spent most of her life in Munich until moving to the United States to live with her daughter in 2007.
She met her husband in 1949 on a ballroom dance floor, and they married in 1951. Johanna became a widow in 1962, and thereafter devoted herself to raising her only daughter and acting as a caregiver to her aging parents. Her daughter married and moved to the United States in 1973, and Johanna subsequently made many visits to see her growing family in Maine.
In recent years, she enjoyed several happy occasions, most notably the weddings of both of her grandchildren and the birth of her first great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her husband, Wilhelm Zimmermann; and her parents.
She is survived by her daughter, Helga Z. Thurston of South Paris; grandson, Kevin Z. Thurston and his wife, Brooke, of Boston; and granddaughter Barbara T. Spangle, her husband, Paul, and great-grandson Colin of Minneapolis, Minn.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the excellent care received by Dr. Francis Kieliszek and Laura Cleveland of Oxford Hills Internal Medicine, as well as Jessica Meserve and Wendy Hess of Beacon Hospice.
