BETHEL — Gould Academy will kick off the second year of the Richard Blanco Visiting Writers Program and Retreat with a special reading from Blanco’s memoir at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11.
Darcy Lambert, director of marketing and communications for Gould Academy, said Blanco will read from “The Prince of Los Cocuyos,” which was released in September.
The Visiting Writers Program and Retreat began in February 2014 as a collaboration between Blanco and Gould Academy. Writers are invited to stay at Blanco’s private cottage for two weeks, work on their craft and work with students in writing workshops.
In March, the first Visiting Writers Program and Retreat was held with poet Spencer Reece.
Lambert said that in March 2015, Gould Academy will host New York poet Rachel McKibbens.
According to her website, McKibbens is the author of two volumes of poetry titled “Pink Elephant” and “Into the Dark and Emptying Field.” She teaches poetry and creative writing in New York.
In a Gould Academy news release, Blanco said, “part of what I learned over the process of being the inaugural poet was that we as a country need to continue to create new generations of readers and appreciators of poetry.
“Through contact with contemporary work and contemporary authors, my hope is that students at Gould Academy can develop that appreciation and understand that poetry, just like any art, is still vibrant and alive today,” Blanco said.
