SOUTH BERWICK, Maine (AP) — A 55-year-old woman was shot to death by police after she made calls saying she wanted to kill herself then pointed a gun at officers, police said.

The Portsmouth Herald reported (http://bit.ly/1w5cdpR) that Karin Moller had called police dispatchers and medical personnel around noon Thursday and said she was suicidal.

York Police Chief Douglas Bracy tells the paper that with police surrounding her home, medical staff and dispatchers tried to talk Moller out of killing herself. After about 45 minutes, she became angry and drove off.

“We also received a call from a family member,” Bracy said. “We knew it was a real threat.”

Police stopped the vehicle using spike strips to prevent a chase that could lead to others being injured, Bracy said.

Bracy said Moller got out of the SUV, walked toward a South Berwick officer and pointed a gun at him. A York officer had arrived by then and when Moller refused to drop the gun, they shot her. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

“She had said (to dispatchers) that if she saw police she would confront them,” Bracy told the paper.

Bracy wouldn’t say if Moller fired her gun. The state’s attorney general is investigating the shooting.

Both officers, who were described as veterans, were placed on leave. Bracy and South Berwick Chief Dana Lajoie said it was the first officer-involved shooting in more than 30 years.
