JAY — The Maine Department of Transportation awarded a $6 million contract to improve Route 4 to a Gorham contractor, George Macdougall, DOT contracts and specifications engineer, confirmed Thursday.
R.J. Grondin & Sons bid $6.07 million for the 1.25-mile section of Route 4 from Pineau Street just south of Tweedie Street. The company was the lowest bidder of three.
The other bidders were Pratt & Sons Inc. of Minot for $6.72 million and Sargent Corp. of Old Town for $6.83 million, according to the DOT’s website.
The Jay Village Water District and the Livermore Falls Water District that serves part of Jay, will do respective waterline replacement at the same time as the state’s work. The town of Jay will also replace sewer lines, if necessary, during the project.
It is up to the the contractor when it starts work, according to Rhobe Moulton, DOT project manager II.
“We will know more what work they plan on doing this winter after our preconstruction meeting currently being set up for later this month,” she said. “After that meeting we will have a much better handle on what will transpire and when.”
Completion of the project is anticipated in fall of 2016, Moulton said previously.
