1924 – 2014
AUBURN — Jacqueline (Campbell) Lumbard, 90, of Auburn, passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 8, at her home.
She was born in Lewiston on Oct. 19, 1924, the daughter of the late Fred Guy and Geneva (Hutchins) Campbell of Mechanic Falls. Raised in Mechanic Falls and on Tripp Lake in Poland, Jackie was an athlete, an adventurer and a musician, playing tympani for the Edward Little High School band, furthering her training at the New England Music Camp and performing as early as 12 with the New England Music Festival band.
After attending Lasell College in Auburndale, Mass., Jackie became one of the nation’s first flight attendants, working for American Airlines (flying their inaugural nonstop transcontinental flight in 1953) and attending the troops in the Korean air-lift. In 1957, she married Henry Griffith Lumbard Jr., “Griff,” and moved to Auburn.
She became an accomplished fundraiser for Central Maine Medical Center’s Women’s Hospital Association, serving as president for two terms and regularly spearheading the publicity for the annual Charity Ball and Red Stocking Review, as well as chairing the Monte Carlo Night at Lost Valley. She was also an active supporter of the SPCA.
Jackie was a strong golfer, tennis player and skier, and loved watching baseball, as long as the Red Sox were playing. She was also an avid bridge player, calling groups to her house and organizing round robins. She was a consummate hostess, enjoying creating parties and, if the mood suited, writing short, pithy poems for her friends.
She had a yen for traveling and went everywhere — Europe, Asia, Africa and Mexico. Her homes and gardens — her rock garden in Auburn and her lily garden at Tripp Lake — were her pride and joy. And more than anything, she loved her silver-gray standard poodles who could always be seen riding in the car with her wherever she went.
She is survived by her son, Mark Lumbard, of Portland and Cape Coral, Fla.; her daughter, Lynn Lumbard, of Freeland, Wash.; four grandchildren, Marley Lumbard, Mekela Swing, Amanda Kelly and Colin Pears; and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband in 2001.
