CARTHAGE — An elderly Peru woman injured Tuesday night when her Jeep slid on ice and rolled into a brook off Route 142 in Carthage remained hospitalized on Wednesday in Lewiston.
Edna Hutchings, 88, was in critical condition, Central Maine Medical Center spokesman Randall Dustin said late Wednesday afternoon by email.
Hutchings suffered chest and back injuries in the accident that happened at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Maine State Police Trooper Keith Barton said.
Barton said Hutchings was driving east toward Dixfield from Weld when she lost control of a 1999 Jeep Cherokee while heading into a curve. The location is known locally as Basin Brook Curve. At the time, a fine mist and fog were freezing on the road.
The Jeep slid sideways off the road and through a snowbank before rolling over onto the roof and coming to rest with the front end of the Jeep in Basin Brook 20 feet down from the road and pointed toward the nearby Webb River.
Carthage fire Chief Dan Skidgell, who was the first to arrive, rescued Hutchings and placed her in his truck to await arrival of a Med-Care Ambulance crew. She was taken to Rumford Hospital and then to CMMC.
