TOPSHAM — Police are advising residents to check their mail promptly and report any suspicious activity following reports that mail was removed from mailboxes on River and Meadow roads on Christmas Eve.
Topsham Police Officer Mark McDonald said Sunday that police still aren’t sure whether any mail was actually stolen.
“We had one report of a bunch of mail dumped at the end of Ward Road, and one guy reported a couple of neighbors saw his mail was crammed into his mailbox,” McDonald said. Most of that mail was postmarked the first week of December.
Still, officers suggest residents check to see if any gift cards, cash or checks were sent to them and not received.
“My initial guess is that’s what they were going after,” he said, “but we haven’t heard any specifics of anyone who for sure had anything taken.”
The U.S. Postal Inspection website recommends that residents retrieve their mail as soon as possible, not send cash through the mail, and save receipts for gift cards in case they are stolen.
Anyone whose mail may have been stolen is asked to contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455 and select option 3. Topsham police also ask that anyone who saw suspicious behavior to call them at 725-4337.
McDonald said the investigation continues and police have no suspects.
