PORTLAND — More than three dozen Mainers on Monday night reported seeing what appeared to be a large fireball.

According to the American Meteor Society, more than 330 reports of a bright fireball were received on Monday, and the fireball was observed from Maine to as far south as Maryland.

According to the meteor society, the event likely occurred around 6:35 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

People in several Maine communities, from as far north as the Waterville area, as far east as Warren and as far south as Kennebunkport, reported seeing the fireball.
