1930 – 2014

LEWISTON — Alfred R. Greely, “Boone,” 84, of Jay, passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 29, at Marshwood Center rehabilitation facility.

He was born in Gardiner on July 23, 1930, a son of Bion and Faith Greely. He was educated in Gardiner schools, graduating from Gardiner High School in 1950.

Al loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved animals, especially his cats and Rokkyo, too; they were his companions — particularly his dear, departed cat, Cookie.

He was an avid sports fan, especially the Red Sox. He lived and breathed baseball; he could tell you about any baseball player, what team they played on and what position they played. He also loved the Patriots and the Celtics. He remembered many people in sports and things that happened way back … years ago. He loved to talk sports with anyone for hours.

He worked as a sheet metal bench mechanic and ran a buffing machine at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for 24 years. He retired from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in 1994. He made many wonderful lifelong friends by working there. He was a senior shop steward in the union for many years and a very strong union man. He was a diehard member of the Machinist Union Lodge No. 1746.

He also did many odd jobs like roofing, selling door mats and pots and pans, as well as managing the Livermore Falls Roller Skating Rink for his in-laws. He also worked at the Augusta Roller Rink.

He will be remembered for his great sense of humor to all who knew him and his storytelling ability. He was also known for his quick wit, or as the family always said, “his one-liners” to all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his daughter, Carrie Barnes, of Jay; a daughter-in-law, Donna Greeley, of Livermore; a granddaughter, Vanese Barnes, of Jay; and two grandsons, Jake Morse and his wife, Liz, of Venice, Fla., and Austin Greeley of Livermore. He also leaves behind two brothers, Robert Greely and his wife, Frances, of Sidney and Alvin and his wife, Margaret, of Farmingdale; one great-grandson, Jordan Morse, of Livermore Falls and one great-grandchild due in March.

He was predeceased by his brother, Bion “Toods” Greely, in 1934; his parents, Bion and Faith Greely; a sister, Glenna Nowell, in 2011; and one son, Chuck Greeley, in 2008.
