1929 – 2014
FARMINGTON — Herbert Brackett Wing, 85, of Farmington, passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, at his home.
He was born in Bingham on Jan. 10, 1929, the only son of Samuel and Hazel (Goodell) Wing. Along with his parents, he was fortunate to live with a very special aunt and uncle, as well as have the love and support of the Green and Whitney families.
Herbert was a decorated soldier in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and continued to serve his country for many years in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was a member of the American Legion.
Herbert married Dorothy Whipple on March 10, 1951.
Upon returning from Korea, Herb worked in the building construction business, and honed a skill that would give him and others satisfaction and pleasure throughout his lifetime. After leaving the construction business, Herb went on to work for New England Telephone Co., for many years, until his retirement.
He was seldom seen without his signature pipe and he was often described as a humble, caring and creative person. Herb was always quick to help a neighbor in need, fix a child’s bike or spend time visiting with a lonely friend. He never wanted credit for his many good deeds.
Herb was a skilled craftsman, building two of his own homes as well as helping his daughters build and remodel their homes. He put his talents to work to make sure each family member had a special piece of his furniture.
Herb was known for his immaculate lawn and beautiful gardens. He enjoyed fly-fishing, cutting wood, gardening, music, collecting insulators and most of all, the time spent with his beloved family. Nothing made him happier! He passed along his gifts to them in many ways. Herb was also known for his love of animals, even if they were eating his garden.
He is survived by his wife of almost 64 years, Dorothy Wing, of Farmington; and his two daughters, Shelley Deane and husband, Rick, of Farmington and Nancy Jones and husband, Shane, of Farmington. Herb considered Rick and Shane sons and loved them deeply. He also leaves his cherished grandchildren, Amanda James and fiancé, Douglas Dumont, Emily Deane and Devon Frechette and husband, Scott; a special grandson, Samuel Jones; and great-grandchildren, Connor and Allura Dumont and Baylee and Rilye Frechette. Later this year, he was looking forward to the birth of his next great-granddaughter, Paisley Mae.
