FARMINGTON — The glare of the sun caused a New Sharon woman to drive into the path of an oncoming 18-wheeler on Wilton Road Friday.

Audrey Smiley, 81, was attempting to turn onto Routes 2 and 4, also known as Wilton Road, from the Big Apple near Hannaford around noon, Farmington police Officer Justin Blais said.

She couldn’t see any traffic coming, he said. But an E.J. Carrier Inc. truck was driving toward her, on its way into Farmington.

The driver of the 2006 Kenworth truck, Kelly Lee, 47, of Livermore, tried to avoid the accident by pulling his truck into the opposite lane, since no one was coming, Blais said.

Smiley’s 2000 Dodge Neon went into the side of the truck, rupturing the truck’s fuel tank, before getting knocked into the truck wheels, crushing the car’s front end.

Smiley was alone in the vehicle and complained of head pain. She was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital by a NorthStar ambulance, he said.

Members of Farmington Fire and Rescue arrived quickly and started cleaning up the fuel before it could spread or go into any drains, Blais said.

Blais assisted Farmington police Officer Ryan Rosie in responding to the accident.
