1950 – 2015

POLAND — Gregory Newell “Greggie” Varney, 64, of Sumner, passed away in his sleep Thursday, Jan. 1, at his “home,” Camp Fernwood in Poland.

He was born in Lewiston on June 8, 1950, a son of Olpha N. Varney and Pauline (Tuttle) Varney.

Greg worked at A.C. Lawrence Leather Co. and H & E Meats until 1970. At that time, Greg found his life’s work and home with Camp Fernwood in Poland and was the head of maintenance right up until his passing. He lived at Fernwood and knew every corner of the camp like “the back of his hand,” taking great care of it through the years.

In his spare time, you could most likely find him puttering around the shop or on Lake Thompson with a fishing rod in hand. If you needed a tip on where to find the fish, chances are Greggie could help you out. He also loved going to the horse races and ice fishing with his nephews, Robbie and Roger Varney.

It’s safe to say that he loved Fernwood and Fernwood loved him back. He left us much too early, but thankfully without suffering. He will be dearly missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing him.
