1930 – 2015

COLUMBIA, S.C. — John “Jack” W. MacHardy, 84, formerly of Mechanic Falls and Summerfield, Fla., died Sunday, Jan. 4, at the home of his daughter, Sandra.

He was born in Portland on Dec. 18, 1930, a son of John A. MacHardy and Evelyn Robinson MacHardy. He grew up and attended schools in Westbrook, and later continued his education in Boston at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy.

Jack met his wife, Beverly Johnson, in Boston, where she was attending secretarial school. They married in 1954 at Fort Hood, Texas, where Jack served in the U.S. Army.

Jack bought a pharmacy in Mechanic Falls in 1958, which he ran for 30 years. A well-respected member of the community, Jack loved the personal relationships he built through his work and various community activities. He knew everybody by name and took pride in providing excellent service to his customers.

Avid golfers, Jack and Bev retired in 1998 and moved to the Spruce Creek Golf and Country Club in Summerfield, Fla. They were very active in retirement, with golf, bridge and other social activities at Spruce Creek. Bev succumbed to Alzheimer’s disease during her final years, and Jack was devoted in caring for her until her death in 2012.
