JAY — A Gorham contractor will begin clearing trees and brush along a 1¼-mile section of Route 4 Monday, project Superintendent Todd Knudsen of R.J. Grondin & Sons, said.

Large signs have been placed near C.N. Brown and Kenoco Kwik Gas flashing messages about the road construction and that businesses will remain open.

Knudsen and others were doing some preliminary work near the Jay Fire Station in Chisholm Village on Wednesday.

The Maine Department of Transportation awarded the contract to the company for $6.07 million in December. Grondin & Sons was the lowest of three bidders for the project, which will run from Pineau Street to just south of Tweedie Street.

It is the second phase of the road construction project. The first phase ran from Bridge Street in Livermore Falls to Pineau Street in Jay and was completed in 2012.

By the end of January, Knudsen said, they expect to work on moving utility poles.

“We’re not going to do a lot of road work until late March, weather permitting,” he said.

There will be one lane of alternating traffic in the work area. Motorists are asked to drive slow there.

Jay Village Water District and Livermore Falls Water District, which serves part of Jay, will do waterline replacement at the same time as the state’s work. The town of Jay will also replace sewer lines, if necessary, during the project.

The road project is anticipated to be completed in the fall of 2016, Rhobe Moulton, project manger with the Maine Department of Transportation, previously said.
