RANGELEY — In a unanimous vote Monday, selectmen approved the permit for the ninth annual New England Pond Hockey Tournament, to be held on Haley Pond starting Saturday, Jan. 31.

Tournament organizer Linda Sikes said the festival is expanding its television advertising leading up to a big celebration for the event’s 10th anniversary in 2016.

“We’ve been out measuring, and there’s already an average of 15 inches of ice on the pond,” Sikes said.

Fire Chief Tim Pellerin, whose department gives material support for the festival, echoed the select board’s sentiment, saying the tournament is a great event for the town and the skating community.

In other business, selectmen accepted the annual signing of documents for the treasurer’s disbursement warrants for employee wages, and disbursement warrants for state fees. It also designated the Parks and Recreation Department’s 2005 Ford F250 truck as surplus to be put out to bid.

The board also accepted donations of $300 each from two local churches to support the Rangeley Region Health Appointment Transportation program.

Public Works has dealt with snow removal and blown-down trees, has repaired the 20-year-old machine used to sand sidewalks and is looking into a replacement.

The airport has been closed because of extremely high winds.
