1920 – 2015
RUMFORD — Olivine M. Chaplin, 94, formerly of Franklin Street, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 8, at Rumford Community Home.
She was born in Canada on Aug. 25, 1920, a daughter of Zephirin J. and Melanie (Valcourt) Lestage. Olivine was the oldest of 14 children and her family settled in Westbrook in 1925. She was naturalized at the age of 16.
She married Vernon Chaplin in Westbrook on Aug. 24, 1940; they celebrated 61 years of marriage. He passed away in 2002. They moved to Rumford in 1946, settling in Mexico. Soon after, in 1967, they moved the family to Dixfield, until 2012.
Olivine will be remembered as a good wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. She was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior. She was a member of St. Theresa’s Guild of Mexico and St. Joseph’s Guild of Dixfield.
Olivine loved knitting, crocheting and sewing, having sewed most of her children’s clothes. She also was an excellent cook and loved getting together with “The Club” to play cards for over 50 years.
Surviving are her children, Shirley McDonald of South Portland, Roger Chaplin and wife, Kathy, of Florida, Patricia Patton of Van Buren, Ark., and Theresa Hemingway and husband, Randy, of Mexico; three brothers, John Lestage of Gorham, Lubert Lestage of Ohio and Andrew Lestage of Florida; eight grandchildren, Thomas O. McDonald Jr., Timothy W. McDonald, Christine Patton, G. Scott Patton and wife, Kara, Ryan Hemingway, Jessica Hemingway, John Kelley and Sarah Pingree and husband, J.R.; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, two sisters, eight brothers, two sons-in-law and a granddaughter.
