1941 – 2015
LEWISTON — Beloved father, friend and community member, Conrad A. Taylor, 73, of Farmington, passed away peacefully after an illness, with his son and daughter by his side on Sunday, Jan. 11, at Central Maine Medical Center.
He was born in East Dixfield on May 11, 1941, a son of Walter and Marion Taylor Sr. On Jan. 14, 1961, he married the late Carol Wetmore. They built their life together with two children, Lori and Jeff.
Conrad was an avid and active member of the stock car racing community, starting with his own racing career in the 1960s and then supporting his son, Jeff, as crew chief though nine Pro-Stock championships at Oxford Plains Speedway, as well as through his racing career in the Busch North Racing Series. Conrad was awarded the NASCAR Crew Chief of the Year award and, in 2012, was inducted into the Maine Motorsports Hall of Fame.
Conrad supported his family as a logger and truck driver, and owned the Sunoco Gas Station in Farmington before owning Conrad’s Auto Repair at his home in Chesterville. Following the closing of his auto repair shop, Conrad supported his son, Jeff, as an employee at Distance Racing in Fairfield.
Conrad took the most pride in his family, including his grandchildren, Tally and Tate Hodgdon.
Conrad is survived by his children, Lori and husband, Brian Robbins, of Jay and Jeff Taylor and his wife, Sherry, of Farmington; sisters, Patricia Williams, Betty Dudley and Pauline Boothby; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Norie and Phillip Clement of Durham; grandchildren, Tally and Tate Hodgdon and T.J. and Dustin Tyler; great-grandson, Riley Tyler; many nieces and nephews; and his dear friend, Timmy “T-Bone” Bullen.
He was predeceased by his wife, Carol Wetmore Taylor, in 2005; his parents, Walter and Marion Taylor; his brother, Walter “Sonny” Taylor Jr.; and his beloved dog, Sam.
He will be greatly missed by his family and community, particularly the racing community.
