1945 – 2015
GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich.— Michael D. Hecker, born on June 10, 1945, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 8, at William Beaumont Hospital, following a sudden, unexpected illness. He was 69 years old.
Mike and Ruth, his wife of 46 years, recently relocated from Williamsburg, Va., to Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. They have one son, Todd, married to Sarah, who have two children, Frank and Sally, also from Grosse Pointe Park.
Mike was born in Lewiston, a son of Hebert and Denise Hecker. Mike was one of 10 children.
He is survived by his siblings, Rose Hinkle, Ronald, Anthony, Gerard, Gloria Donovan and Joseph; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mike was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Herb Jr. and Frank; and a sister, Mona.
Shortly after his graduation from Edward Little High School in Auburn, Mike moved to Boston, Mass. He lived there briefly, before joining the U.S. Army. He served as a parachute rigger in the Army Special Services, from 1965 to 1967.
After his honorable discharge, he moved to Michigan to be near his future wife, Ruth. They married on Ruth’s birthday, July 27, 1968. Over the next 31 years, Mike worked tirelessly in purchasing and management to provide a comfortable life for his family. During this time, he also went to Walsh Business College to complete his bachelor’s degree.
In his retirement, Mike was fortunate enough to spend his time traveling and playing cards with Ruth and their friends, playing with his grandchildren or simply adding to the endless list of books he had read. Mike found much pleasure and enjoyment from his creative pursuits, including writing, photography, woodworking and gardening.
Mike will be missed, but more so, he will be remembered for his unwavering love of family and the lessons of pure grace he passed on to all he touched. His contagious, fun-loving personality and vibrant, energetic spirit will always bring a smile to all who were fortunate enough to be part of his life. They were powered by his sunny spirit and the spark that ignited joy, laughter and merriment. Everyone who knew Mike became familiar with the Hecker sense of humor, as he shared his unique puns and jokes.
Mike’s bright light will continue to shine on all of us who delighted in his life’s journey.
