1927 – 2015
AUBURN — Bertrand G. Chenard, 87, of 93 Summit Ave., Lewiston, passed away quietly on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice in Auburn.
Bertrand was born in Lewiston on Dec. 30, 1927, the son of Henri and Irma Dutil Chenard. He went to school in Lewiston.
Bert proudly served in the U.S. Army, and on Nov. 10, 2014, he was presented with the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Germany Medal.
He married Jeannette C. Cote on Oct. 24, 1953.
A member of Holy Cross Church, Prince of Peace Parish, he also belonged to Holy Cross Senior Citizens and the Mid-Maine Motorcycle Association.
He was a wonderful husband, brother and uncle with a mild manner and contagious smile. He was loved by everyone he met. Bert loved watching his favorite football team, the Patriots, and riding motorcycles, but most of all, he loved playing cribbage with friends at the Auburn Mall and with the seniors at the Lewiston Armory. He cherished his time spent with his godson, Steve Rodrigue, and his wife and kids, whether it was up at camp, games on the weekend, ride-alongs or night-time phone calls to celebrate his cribbage wins or defeats. He loved greatly, and in return was greatly loved by his many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He worked at the Androscoggin Mill, Lepage Bakeries and later retired from Webster Engineering as a machinist in 1990.
Survivors include three sisters, Irene Andrews and Rita Rodrigue of Lewiston and Pauline Blanchard of Westfield, Mass.; two brothers, Marcel Chenard of Osprey, Fla., and Romeo Chenard of Lewiston; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Jeannette C. Chenard, sister, Carmen Lafontaine, and a brother, Roger Chenard.
