FALMOUTH — Mildred Currie, 89, of Falmouth, died peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 8, with her two sons at her side.

Millie was born in Lewiston on May 22, 1925. Her parents had immigrated to this country from Lithuania. Millie graduated from Lewiston High School in 1942 and from the University of Maine in 1946.

She worked in the advertising department of the Lewiston Daily Sun after graduating from college until she met and married her husband, Stanley R. Currie, and moved with him to Jersey City, N.J., where he began his career on Wall Street in New York City.

Over the next several decades, Millie devoted her life to raising their two sons. She was a kind and gentle soul and taught her sons to focus on the goodness of everyone and everything around them. She was famous for her beet green soup and barankas (Lithuanian bagels). She was selfless in her devotion to her family.

When her husband retired in 1977, Millie and Stan moved back to Maine where their sons were living and raising their own families. Millie, known as Nana, was a force of joy and optimism in the lives and upbringing of her four granddaughters and one grandson.

Nana’s husband, Stan, predeceased her in 1998, and she is survived by her two sons, Tab and Mike; Tab’s wife, Mellory, and Mike’s significant other, Leslie; her five grandchildren, Molly (Mrs. Clydesdale), Elizabeth (Beeker), Samantha (Angel), Alex (Bubba) and Amy (Dukes); Molly’s husband, Darby, and Elizabeth’s husband, Vaughn; and her great-granddaughter, Lila.
