1949 – 2015
NEWRY —Richard Roland Dutile, of Greene, passed away Friday, Jan. 16, in the western mountains of Maine, of an apparent heart attack, doing something he loved, skiing.
Richard was born Oct. 24, 1949, to Marcel and Muriel (Gervais) Dutile in Lewiston. He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1967. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and served the country for four years. Upon returning to Lewiston, he brought along his first love, a 1971 bright red MGB Roadster. He graduated from SMVTI in 1973 and started a career in refrigeration and air conditioning. This led him to BNAB and then to Bath, where he worked as a quality assurance specialist for supervisor of shipbuilding for 24 years.
After retiring, Richard had more time for his many hobbies. He continued his relationship with wheels (bicycles, motorcycle and sports cars) and especially enjoyed tinkering and restoring older sports car models while listening to “Car Talk.” He was very analytical and inquisitive so he could rescue all of his loved ones from the many bumps of life, from a flat tire to a leaky pipe. He solved all of them with a smile and we knew we were loved. Retirement also provided time for traveling, camping and skiing. He especially loved trips to Acadia and to visit his children. During retirement, Richard enjoyed and was fulfilled by his long- time role as a volunteer for Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation. He helped in the areas of skiing, biking, hiking and kayaking!
He is survived by his wife, Theda (Lyden); his son, Peter Dutile of Burlington, Vt.; his daughter, Katy Dutile of Gulu, Uganda, and Derek Jacob of Taipei, Taiwan. He also leaves behind his sisters, Denise Dutile of Soldotna, Alaska, and Carmen Redfearn of Reading, Mass. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and cherished friends.
The family wishes to thank the ski patrol of Sugarloaf for its assistance.
