DEAR SUN SPOTS: We invite fellow community members to kick off the new year on a positive note. Share your knowledge to help an adult transform his or her future by becoming a Literacy Volunteers tutor.

If you are 21 or older, have a 12th-grade or higher reading level, are patient, creative and well organized, you could be an effective tutor. The minimum commitment is to meet one on one with an adult student for an hour per week for a period of one year.

We have many adults waiting with a wide range of skill level and goals. In particular, we need volunteers who are comfortable assisting students trying to obtain their GED with math, reading and writing, as well as individuals who can assist learners from other countries.

Our next tutor-training workshop will be held on Jan. 31 and Feb. 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Auburn Public Library. Registration is required by Jan. 23. For more information call us at 207-333-4785 or email [email protected]. Also, check out our website at www.literacyvolunteersandro.org. — Tahlia Chamberlain, executive director, Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin, Auburn, [email protected]

ANSWER: Sun Spots didn’t notice the deadline. She is really sorry she didn’t get this notice in earlier. Hopefully there will still be open slots if someone would like to volunteer.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Recently there was a posting regarding someone who collects used magazines and brings them to local nursing homes. I would like to get her contact information. I have several magazines that I hate to just throw away but would love to share with others. — Tamra via email

ANSWER: You can reach V. in Auburn at 207-784-3803. The preferred magazines are Woman’s World, Family Circle, Woman’s Day, Reminisce, Country and Country Woman, Better Homes and Good Housekeeping.

Tamra’s email and phone are from out of state. Sun Spots hopes that she is not planning on mailing them. The cost would be excessive. Perhaps she’s recently moved to Maine and hasn’t changed her contact information yet.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thank you for all the help you provide your readers. At one time you printed a list of beauticians who go to people’s homes. Would you print it again, please? Thank you. — No Name via email

ANSWER: Here is what Sun Spots has in her Rolodex. Also, see the next letter from a new provider.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have been told by a few readers that they have read several times in your column about people looking for a hairdresser that will come to them. I have recently opened a traveling salon.

I live in Canton and will travel within 30 miles of my house for my regular prices and then 50 cents a mile is added after that.

I have a portable sink and dryer and am all set up for just about any service you would need. I have lots of experience and love to help people. — Nichole Goding, Lake Hills Traveling Salon, Canton, [email protected], 207-897-8060

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Roak Block has received the Christmas trees that we needed, and I wanted to say thank-you to the wonderful people we met while doing this. I said maybe we should do this again so we can meet many more wonderful people.

We will have these beautiful trees on every floor of our building this year. We got two 9-footers and one tree that came from Pecks Department Store. We were struck by the fact that many of us had our pictures taken there with the REAL Santa so many years ago.

If anyone wants to come see them, please let us know and we will bring you in to visit. Thanks again. — Leta and the other Roak Block tenants, [email protected]
