CASCO — A 26-year-old man prohibited by law from possessing a firearm was arrested Sunday night and charged with threatening his girlfriend by pointing a loaded gun at her face.

Jeffrey E. Smith Jr. of Casco was arrested in the bathroom of his home and charged with domestic violence criminal threatening with a firearm, theft by receiving, violation of bail conditions and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, Lt. Donald Foss of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said Monday in a release.

Cumberland County sheriff’s deputies went to the home after receiving a report that a man was arguing with his girlfriend and allegedly pointed a handgun at her face. When they arrived at the home, deputies removed the woman and a 10-year-old boy, but the alleged victim reported that her 11-month-old daughter was in the bedroom in which the suspect was last seen.

Deputies found Smith in the bathroom and arrested him without incident, according to the release. The baby was found unharmed in her crib. No injuries were reported to anyone in the home.

A search of the home allegedly turned up a fully loaded handgun hidden in the clothes dryer, mixed in with other clothing. Further investigation revealed the firearm had been reported stolen to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office, according to the release. The investigation into that stolen handgun continues.

At the time of his arrest, Smith was on bail conditions for a 2014 arrest charging felony theft, according to the release, and was prohibited from possessing firearms because of past domestic violence convictions.

He remained held without bail in Cumberland County Jail on Monday and was scheduled to be arraigned Monday afternoon.
