1921 – 2015

NORWAY — Walter H. Curtis, 93, of Oxford, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 24, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Falmouth on Nov. 26, 1921, a son of William and Lottie (Godwin) Curtis. He attended Salisbury, Conn., schools and later enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, serving during World War II, until 1945.

Walter worked as a heavy equipment operator for 43 years in Massachusetts, 34 of which was for the Local 4 union. He retired in 1986, after marrying Barbara (Yeager) Dixon of Shirley, Mass., in Oxford on Dec. 22, 1984.

He was a member of the Masons, the American Legion and the VFW. As a younger man, Walter had his pilot’s license, owned his own plane and enjoyed flying. In recent years, he enjoyed the company of friends at his camp on Whitney Pond in Oxford and boating.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of Oxford; stepchildren, Tommy Caldwell of Poland, Teddy Caldwell of Lewiston, Harold Caldwell of Gray, Corrine Bolduc of Lewiston and Mark Dixon of Ayer, Mass.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, William B. Curtis, of Norway; and half-brothers, William Curtis of New York and Walter Curtis of Colorado.

He was predeceased by his first wife of 34 years, Arlene Caldwell; a step-daughter, Irene Bennett; and a sister, Myrtle Pulsifer.
