Rather a cool reception is that accorded to the military idea in the public schools, when it comes to a local application of it, judging from the position taken by Supt. D. J Callahan of the Lewiston schools. “I have no Idea,” said he, when interviewed this week, “that people would stand for such a procedure here. I have heard no commendation for it, save from those directly or indirectly interested in military matters, I do not believe the Lewiston school board would endorse such an idea here, when sentiment prevails against it.”

A serious water break was discovered early this morning at Pine and Shawmut Streets, Lewiston, and had it not been for the season of the year, a large section of the roadway could have collapsed, resulting in much damage. Charles Vaillancourt, assistant water superintendent, said frost in the ground held up the road, above a large section of earth that had been washed away. Vaillancourt estimated some 15 square feet of road, directly in the middle of the intersection, could have collapsed.

Lewiston may see the beginnings of a waste recycling program as early as this spring, Public Works Director Chris Branch told the Lewiston Solid Waste Management Task Force Tuesday night. Branch said that the city is looking at a joint recycling effort with four smaller area towns. He said the names of the towns is confidential as negotiations are still under way, but said he will meet with representatives from three of the towns Wednesday, after which he may make the names public. Branch said recycling corrugated cardboard from commercial sources could remove about 10 percent by weight of the city’s waste from the landfill, and could be under way by spring.
