It was believed by Alton C. Morrill, Auburn city electrician, that the stillness of the air Monday morning, resulted in the exceptionally loud blasts from the Auburn police horn at Turner and Court streets. The blasts on the horn were about 6 a.m. The horn, which was installed more than a year ago, is used to summon the officer on the beat in that area. Another horn is located at Court and Main streets.

When stores at the Auburn Mall open for business Monday morning, Ward Bros. will not be among them. The firm will close its doors tonight, according to owner Margaret Griswold, leaving its 15 employees without work. An institution in fine women’s clothing for the past 60 years at its Lisbon Street, Lewiston, location, Ward Bros. moved to the Auburn Mall in November, hoping to make it more accessible to shoppers. The location of Ward Bros. at the former Benoit’s store was supposed to be temporary. Ward’s was expected to move to another, undisclosed, location at the Auburn Mall this spring.
