1924 – 2014
LEESBURG, Fla. — Marcel C. Dulac of Lewiston and Leesburg, Fla., died peacefully in the usual manner in which he did all things … with dignity, grace and courage. He died with family by his side in his home in Leesburg, Fla., on Dec. 28, at the age of 90.
Marcel was born in Lewiston on Sept. 24, 1924, the son of Adelard and Anastasia Caron Dulac. He was raised in a large, loving family and attended Lewiston schools.
To tell the world what a wonderful man and father he was would take a whole book. A quick summary would be that our dad worked hard and honestly all of his life. He set a fine example in all areas and aspects to us as our Dad. There is no exaggeration in saying he was a truly good man: Honest, loyal and loving.
He served in the U.S. Army in 1942, until he was seriously wounded during World War II in France. This was a discouraging period of his life due to serious life-changing disabilities. But, being one of the most positive and grateful people on the planet, he embarked on moving forward.
He fell in love with and married our mother, Theresa Bergeron Dulac, in 1944. Together, as a team, they raised five children: Richard, Mark, Paul, Mary Ann and Suzanne Dulac. He built his own home, literally — a place we will always remember with memories of a safe place for all of us to grow and learn.
He worked his “art” as a master plumber in Lewiston and surrounding areas in Maine and New Hampshire. Later, in 1969, he took the position as the director of the Housing Inspection Department for the city of Lewiston, until he retired. While working for the city, he made many positive changes in that department, noted by local officials and the governor. He was interested in and worked on energy conservation projects.
After his retirement, he was able to enjoy some of his favorite things. He encouraged our mother to fulfill her dream of continuing her college education.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He had a deep love of family. He enjoyed teaching them to respect the beauty of God’s creation around them. He built some “nature trails” for his family to learn about plants and native animals.
He loved fishing and hunting from a young age onward and explored many rural areas of Northern Maine. Many happy memories were made at one of his favorite spots at Moosehead Lake, where he taught us to enjoy fishing, hiking and camping.
He loved music and enjoyed playing fun songs on his piano and harmonica. He built birdhouses of all sizes and shapes. He fed and loved his “bird neighbors.” He built elaborate Lego creations with his grandchildren. He had an amazing sense of humor.
He was proud to have planted over 800 trees in his lifetime. He loved photography. He was curious and fascinated with the world around him. He never stopped learning and reading. At the age of 78, he took an interest in growing hardy Maine roses. At the age of 86, he helped care for his first honeybee colony.
He had a deep respect for people and life. In 2006, he met and married Pauline Gaddy. They were married in the Grand Canyon and enjoyed many adventures together. They traveled to many places he always wanted to visit, such as Hawaii, the Caribbean Islands and his favorite place … Alaska. They enjoyed the past four years surrounded by warm friendships and warm weather at their home in Leesburg, Fla.
We would like to thank Pauline for caring and sharing in his life and adventures.
Although we are feeling a great loss and much grief, we are also filled with a tremendous gratitude for having had a trusted friend and wonderful human being as our father and grandfather.
He was also a member of the VFW and the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Arbor Day Society.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline Gaddy Dulac, of Leesburg, Fla.; son and spouse, Mark and Carolyn Tucker Dulac of Minot; daughter and spouse, Mary Ann Dulac Glebocki and Maurice Glebocki of Lewiston; a brother, Roland Dulac, of Eliot; a sister, Simmone Hamman of Rochester, N.H.; grandchildren and spouses, Jason and Nicole Dulac, Erin and Jesse Hutchingson, Kelsea and Paul Nelson, Julia Dulac, Marius and C. Glebocki, Nicole and Travis Saucier, Torrie Dulac, Kyle Beaulieu, Kurtis Dulac, Sarah Dulac and Taylor Dulac; and many great-grandchildren and wonderful friends and relatives in both Maine and Florida.
He was predeceased by his wife, Theresa Bergeron Dulac; two sons, Richard and Paul Dulac; his daughter, Suzanne; his parents; and many siblings.
A special thank-you to the guidance and sincere care shown by the Leesburg, Fla., hospice team.
