AUGUSTA (AP) — A husband and wife from Augusta have been sent to jail for stealing from state welfare programs.

In an unrelated case, a Whitefield woman also received time behind bars for receiving benefits to which she was not entitled.

The Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/1z3RtuW ) reported that in the first case, 60-year-old Walter Trask and 59-year-old Kathryn Trask were each sentenced Monday to two years in prison with all but 30 days suspended and two years’ probation for receiving more than $39,000 in food stamps, MaineCare and the energy assistance they were ineligible to receive. They were also ordered to pay restitution.

In the other case, 42-year-old Connie Wheeler was sentenced to three years in prison with all but 90 days suspended and two years’ probation for illicitly receiving $17,000 in food stamp benefits.
